- Closed-mouth snoring indicates that your tongue is the cause of your snoring, and that some exercises and lifestyle changes should help eliminate the snoring.
- Open-mouthed snoring can be caused by sinus trouble or by posture in bed, and can be remedied by addressing those issues.
- Snoring from any position might indicate apena or other significant issues that will require more substantial medical treatment to address.
If you really want to stop snoring, you are going to have to work at it. First, you will have to work on finding the right solution. Then, you will have to work on using that solution every night. It’s not good enough to only use your anti-snore pillow once a week, or use your mouth guard every other day. If you truly want a happier and quieter night’s sleep, you may have to work hard to earn it! Rhinoplasty surgery should be your last option.

Think about your nose for a moment.
For good or bad, it’s one of the first things people notice about your appearance since it sits right in the center of your face. Now follow that thought with this comforting fact: no one’s nose is perfect–even those Hollywood actresses with seemingly flawless features and nostrils have small imperfections.
Noses get noticed. That’s why countless nose jobs (or rhinoplasty if we use the technical name) are performed each year. Part of the reason is the bike rides, rock climbing, baseball, football, skateboarding and surfing activities take their toll on noses. When accidents happen, rhinoplasty procedures usually follow. But accidents aren’t the only reason for a nose job. There are good reasons for a nose job that are both medical and cosmetic. No matter the reason, let’s look at 3 reasons to get a nose job.
Reason #1: Your Nose Is Repaired for Medical Reasons
You’ve likely heard of a deviated septum. A deviated septum is the medical name for a condition where the center cartilage of the nose (the nasal septum) is off-center. A deviated septum creates difficulty breathing through the nose. Typically, the condition is more pronounced on one side of the nose and can sometimes result in sinusitis or sinus infections.
It’s estimated that more than 80-percent of all nasal septums are off-center. When a doctor diagnoses a deviated septum, he or she will perform a septoplasty, which is the surgical correction of a deviated septum. Septoplasties are typically not peformed on patients younger than 18 because the septum grows until age 18.
Many people are born with a deviated septum. Others have experienced some sort of accident or trauma and the result is that the internal cartilage in their nose has shifted and prevents them from breathing easily.
The Ear, Nose and Throat doctors will diagnose your condition and perform a septoplasty that ultimately improves breathing. Even better for family members and sleeping partners, repairing s deviated septum typically results in less snoring. So those sleepless nights for the snorers and those who live in close proximity may quickly come to and end.
“Sleeping and exercise are dramatically improved after septoplasty,” adds Dr. Bennett.
Reason #2: Your Nose is Damaged in an Accident
Florida residents love to exercise. They love to get outside and push themselves to their limits. But gravity and blunt force trauma have a great way of bringing us back to earth and we often treat broken noses on patients who face-planted while running or took a nasty elbow to the face during a game.
Car accidents are another likely culprit in creating broken noses. The good news is that if a broken nose is treated within two weeks of the accident, the results are very positive.
“After a nose is broken and displaced, we have about a two-week window in which we can return the nasal bones into their correct position with little trouble,” says Dr. Filiberto. “After two weeks, the bones become fixed in the fractured position and it is much more difficult to straighten.”
Some patients consider their adjusted nose an improvement on the old one. Our advice following nose surgery is to take it easy, but some Floridians never learn. Guess that’s the curse of living in a state where going nose-to-nose with your competition and the elements is a passion.
Reason #3: You Choose a Nose Job for Cosmetic Reasons
Your nose is one of your most prominent features. For good or bad. Some patients may have nose bumps they would like smoothed. Others may feel their nose is too big or too small. Still others may have had a rhinoplasty in the past and are unhappy with the results. Whatever your reason for seeking a nose job, the Ear, Nose and Throat Center wants to help you feel good about your nose and your appearance.
“The ideal nose should complement the face, and not detract from it,” says Dr. Filiberto. “When we look at a person, we look at the eyes, the mouth, the hair. If a nose calls attention to itself, that can be a distraction. The nose can ‘make or break’ a face.”
A good nose job can help raise your self esteem. A bad nose can knock it down. We specialize in great nose jobs. Yet while a great nose job can help you feel more confident about your appearance, it can’t change deeper self-esteem issues. And we want to be sure you have realistic expectations about how a nose job will impact your life. So we will spend time with you discussing rhinoplasty options long before we ever operate.
The best rhinoplasty is simply removing the faults of the nose and, in the end, the nose does not look ‘operated’ on.

There is no one age that is considered ideal for a Facelift Surgery. Patients can be in their late 30s or upper 70s and still be a good candidate for surgery, as long as they are in good health. Overall, the results of a facelift or facial rejuvenation surgery done in your 40’s or 50s will be more natural than in your late 60s or 70s.
Facial aging changes start to become noticeable in the late 30’s for most people. As these changes progress through the 40’s and 50’s deep facial lines caused by skin folds and loss of facial volume from fat loss create permanent skin changes that are difficult to correct with a facelift alone. Taking action early, in your 40’s or 50’s by having a Facelift or Volume enhancement by Fillers or Fat will help prevent these permanent changes. The most important factor is not really your age but whether or not you have facial aging changes which can be corrected with a Facelift.

Gynecomastia is a condition in which boys or men develop lumps under their nipples, causing them to stick out and resulting in abnormally large or feminine breasts (often called “bitch tits”). Gynecomastia is extremely common and can be embarrassing for those who have it. Of all the procedures Dr. Filiberto performs for his male patients, gynecomastia treatment is the most popular. “It’s very hard to put a number on the amount of top bodybuilders who’ve had their gynecomastia done, but it’s pretty common,” he explains.
Most male bodybuilders are very body-conscious and place a high value on their appearance. This often times causes men to push their physique to the limits by experimenting with steroids use. While most men will do their research on the pros and cons of taking steroids and learn they will be at risk of developing gynecomastia, they don’t seem to truly understand the implications should they develop enlarged male breasts. Steroids are converted by the body (often fat cells) into estrogen. This increase in estrogen levels is what can cause men to develop unwanted breast tissue. Another misunderstanding in the bodybuilding community is the belief that if you develop enlarged male breasts while taking steroids, it will simply go away after you stop taking them. This is not true. Breast tissue that has developed from using steroids will not go away. It is permanent. Not even diet or increasing chest workouts will remedy the problem. Gynecomastia surgery is the only solution for removing breast tissue.

Lifestyle Lift is calling it quits??
Lifestyle Lift, often featured in infomercial-like advertisements claiming to allow consumers to “look as young on the outside as you feel on the inside,” specializes in less-invasive facelift procedures that require only local anesthesia and short recovery periods. With promises to clients it can remove wrinkles, frown lines and sagging skin in just a matter of an hour. If you were planning to stop by one of the company’s centers on Thursday you are likely met with locked doors and few answers.

In past weeks the media has refocused its attention on bullying to discuss fat shaming and its growingly popular retort, fat acceptance. Recently, Oprah’s program “Where Are They Now” featured a father who pressured his daughter into undergoing weight loss surgery, claiming he would love her more if she were skinny.
As a plastic surgeon, “fat shaming” is a major cause for teens visiting my office. The patients and/or their parents come in looking for a fast fix to alleviate the pain associated with this phenomenon. Typically liposuction is the option they hope for. However, my response is always the same. “Let’s deal with the global weight issue first.” I encourage them to try and empower themselves by improving their health before simply undergoing surgery. The only gain I want to see for my patients is in self -esteem.
Bullying is always wrong, but in my opinion, so is “accepting a state of overweight.”
Parents must diligently work to remain the guardians of their children’s self–esteem and that begins with body image. Unfortunately, we live in a society where success is often equated with the size of one’s waistline. We cannot legislate or police how people feel. However, we can encourage the youths of this generation to take control of their bodies.
If you are ready to challenge yourself to move toward improved health, wellness and enjoy a better body image, the power is yours. Your only gain will be in self-esteem and your only loss will be in weight.

A recent Time Magazine story revealed that scientists now realize that obesity is actually aging our childrens’ bodies. Fat is not inert, it states, it is an active and detrimental force that is shortening our childrens’ lives.
I have encountered many parents in my work here at the practice, and they are not even aware of their kids eating habits or how they gained the weight they now need to lose.
The book, THE RESTORE POINT: The Safe and Sane ™ Guide to a Lifetime of Lean for Kids and Families includes a checklist of basic signs that point to a possible imbalance in your child’s ability to burn the right amount of calories to stay fit. Some of these issues may be behavioral, others may be nutritional, some may be a combination of both. If you notice, many of these issues are not something that stares you in the face, but rather, they are behavioral issues that point to difficulty around food and a poor body image.
Some of these behaviors, like sneak eating, occur even before your child is visibly overweight. These behaviors point to an eventual problem not far down the line. Others, like male breasts, show that a visible obesity level may have already been reached. Stay tuned to this blog for critical information on how you can prevent health issues from arising in childhood and teen obesity.
An Awareness Checklist for Parents
- Your child is visually, noticeably overweight.
- Your child is concealing food and eating in solitude.
- Your child is having trouble in gym class.
- Your male child shows the growth of noticeable male breasts (gynecomastia).
- Your child is living a virtual as opposed to actual social life—spending more than 2 hours a day for recreation on the computer rather than outside playing.
- Your child is being bullied at school.
- Your child is having repeat issues with cavities (high sugar diet).
- Your teenage girl will not go out clothes shopping with you or with her friends (she may not be able to fit into traditional sizes).
- Your teenage child has issues with relating to the opposite sex: shyness, avoidance, etc.
- Your child’s eating habits are noticeably meager but their body is not (points to eating in secret).
If you answered “yes” to almost all of these issues, then there may be an inbalance in the way your child is dealing with food.
Even if you answered “yes” to many of these questions on behalf of your child or teen—this is not the time to feel defeated. This is the starting point for change. By knowing your child’s regular eating habits, we can help change them for a lifetime of fitness and lean living.
You can make these changes together. That means that you and your family will need to be as mindful about what you eat and how you exercise with your child. It may be challenging, but the rewards can be life altering.

When the American Society of Plastic Surgeons released their statistics, it was no surprise to Dr. Frank Filiberto that breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, liposuction, and facelift were the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States. However, we have noticed at our practice that nonsurgical procedures – particularly injectables – are increasing steadily in popularity.
The current trend in aesthetic enhancement is a less aggressive approach to rejuvenation. For our average patient seeking cosmetic treatment, the goal is an end result that looks natural and realistic, rather than overdone and artificial. The dramatic increase in injectable treatments is, in part, due to their overall ease, availability, and minimal down time. Injectables such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and JUVÉDERM® can often be a more practical and conservative approach to achieving younger-looking skin without making an overly-dramatic impact on your appearance. Patients seeking to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and restore lost volume – or to take preventive measures against these common signs of aging – have many nonsurgical treatment options available if a full facelift is not considered an options by the patient.
