Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) Procedure

Cosmetic eyelid surgery, or Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure used to refine and enhance puffy or droopy eyelids as well as under eye bags and aging changes beneath the eyes by sculpting and contouring the tissues of the lower eyelid. Depending on the specific condition, Dr. Filiberto performs a number of different procedures that can markedly reduce visual fatigue and improve visual function while restoring a more youthful appearance to your eyes.

Your upper and/or lower eyelid procedure is performed in an ultra-modern, licensed private outpatient surgery center in Dr. Filiberto’s office. This surgery does not require general anesthesia. The Doctor will sedate you while monitoring your vital signs. Once you are sedated, local anesthesia will be administered to the operative area. This protocol routinely leads to a very safe and comfortable experience. Patients regularly express surprise at the pleasantness of the experience.

During upper eyelid blepharoplasty, an incision is hidden deep in the crease under the fold of the upper eyelid, thus hiding the incision line until it fades and matures. From this incision excess tissues are sculpted and contoured. Dr. Filiberto then closes the wound with a fine row of sutures.  In a lower eyelid blepharoplasty An incision is made through the skin beneath the eyelashes. From here, excess fat is removed, then the muscle is tightened, and sutures are placed.

Blepharoplasty – Before Your Surgery

The first step is a consultation with Dr. Filiberto in our comfortable private office. You can expect our office staff to be personable, knowledgeable and respectful of your time. Dr. Filiberto will discuss your concerns, review your medical history, perform an examination, and then thoroughly discuss options and alternatives available to you. Dr. Filiberto will also review any medications and/or herbal supplements you may be taking which could cause bleeding during or after blepharoplasty surgery.

Once you and Dr. Filiberto have agreed on a treatment plan, our staff will work with you to schedule at your convenience.

If a patient has not been on a home skin-care regimen with occasional visits to the esthetician for specialty treatments, it’s best to get him or her started before any rejuvenation. Skin that is healthy is much more likely to heal faster and look better. If patients have been on a regimen, they are encouraged to continue after any procedure to maintain the skin, although some procedures will require special skin-care treatments during the healing phase.

Our esthetician can help get the skin in ideal shape by employing procedures such as mild peels depending on each individual person’s needs. Peels can improve the texture of the skin and can address both pigmentation and fine lines, delivering Absolutely Natural organic products into the skin for skin health.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Recovery Process

You will be asked to avoid driving for twenty-four hours after blepharoplasty to allow sedating medications to leave your system. This will necessitate that you have a driver available to return you home after the cosmetic eyelid surgery. Although you can expect not to feel ‘laid up’ following surgery, you should plan to relax, stay home, and use cold compresses on your eyes the remainder of the day of surgery as well as the day after.

Significant bruising typically occurs, but can be expected to resolve within two weeks. In order to avoid postoperative bleeding and/or wound disruption, Dr. Filiberto asks that you avoid strenuous activity for ten days to two weeks.

Patients often ask when they can return to work following an eyelid operation. Everyone should plan to take off at least the day of and day after surgery. Most take off several days more, depending on how they feel about being seen with healing eyes and the degree of physical activity required at work.

After about two weeks most people are able to go out in public without being noticed, although it takes several months for surgical incisions to fully mature (settle in),

About one week after surgery you will return to Dr. Filiberto’s office for your first post-operative appointment to check on the progress of your healing and have your sutures removed. Under normal circumstances, you will have your next and probably final post-operative checkup several months later to confirm that all is well and to evaluate the early results of your transformation. Dr. Filiberto will see you more frequently during the healing period should you or he deem it necessary. Surgical wounds mature during the twelve months following eyelid surgery, so expect your new look to refine itself over time.

Patients routinely combine an eyelid operation and surgical laser skin rejuvenation into the same procedure to maximize the aesthetic results while minimizing cost and recovery time.
